Nrg4SD and ORU launch Report on the participation of regional governments in Voluntary National Reviews

The document “SDGs at the Subnational Level: Regional Governments in the VNR” was presented during the High-Level Political Forum of New York

From the 10th to the 19th of July The United Nations held the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) for Sustainable Development, the platform for the follow up and review of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs in the member states, at its headquarters in New York, United States. The 44 member States that have carried out Voluntary National Reviews (VNR) presented the reports on their efforts to implement the 2030 Agenda in their territories.

In this regard, during a Side Event organized by nrg4SD and the governments of Flanders and Catalonia, nrg4SD and ORU Fogar launched the report “SDGs at the Subnational Level: Regional Governments in the VNRs”.

Based on a consultation with 12 regional governments and associations, spanning from eight out of the total 44 countries presenting Voluntary National Reviews in the 2017 HLPF, the report highlights important findings and recommendations on how regional governments have been and should be included in the national reviews on the SDGs. Moreover, the report also introduces some interesting considerations on how regional governments can be enabled to play its potential as drivers of the implementation, but also of the monitoring, follow-up and review of the SDGs. Whether it is through the collaboration and alignment with the national strategies, or through their own plans and projects, the SDGs can only be achieved at the subnational level with the direct support and contribution of regional governments.

The Report was presented on the 13th of July during the Side Event “Regional Governments in the 2030 Agenda”, organized by nrg4SD in collaboration with the Delegation of the Government of Flanders to the USA and the Delegation of the Government of Catalonia to the USA. The event focused on implementation of the SDGs by intermediate governments, and especially their involvement and inclusion in national processes, and the creation of their own plans and strategies in others.
