AEBR leads the new EU initiative Interreg Volunteer Youth

The IVY project has been launched to promote solidarity among young Europeans in the Interreg programs (European Territorial Cooperation)

The Association of European Border Regions (AEBR, member of ORU Fogar) has launched a new initative called Interreg Volunteer Youth (IVY), which will allow young people between 18 and 30 years old to collaborate as volunteers in a variety of cross-border, inter-regional or transnational programs. After signing an agreement with the European Commission’s Directorate-General of Regional and Urban Policy (DG REGIO), AEBR assumed the leadership of this pilot initiative that will have a duration of one year.

Co-financed by DG REGIO, the IVY program is part of the European Solidarity Corps. It is aimed at involving young volunteers to support, promote and report the concrete achievements of Interreg programmes and projects, as well as generally promoting cooperation across European borders and related values such as solidarity. IVY will give volunteers the opportunity to familiarise with the Interreg programmes and projects, make them aware of the many benefits of collaboration among EU internal borders as well as enhance their sense of European solidarity, citizenship and civic engagement.

IVY is structured around two main strands: On the one hand, the Interreg Project Partners, which will help with project implementation focusing on specific aspects or difficulties to be solved in fields such as solidarity projects, people to people projects, health projects or community-based projects. On the other hand, the Interreg Reporters will help with disseminating information on the benefit of territorial integration on the ground, through reporting successful projects. Less than three weeks after IVY’s official launch, the first volunteer has been deployed and has already started working as Interreg Reporter at the Joint Secretariat of the Danube Transnational Programme (DTP) in Budapest.
