Building a sustainable future

On July 1, in the framework of Hight Level Political Forum of the United Nations which evaluates the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, with the support of ORU Fogar, Regions4 organizes the seminar “Building a Sustainable and Resilient Future”, a space in which leading subnational governments from different continents will evaluate projects in defense of the planet and human prosperity.

The event is based on the proposition that the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and most of the 17 SDGs is not on track. It is not because the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed social and economic inequalities and the inseparable link between the human health and the planet health, but the lack of a systematic approach that addresses all risks and seizes all opportunities. Therefore, after the pandemic, this event is committed to developing a roadmap to carry forward human progress and protect the planet, in which all levels of government participate, working in a collaborative way.

The HLPF in general, and this seminar in particular, are the space to prepare for the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15), which will be held in October and will adopt an ambitious global framework of biodiversity to accelerate actions to protect the nature; and the 26th United Nations Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP26) will be held in November and will reinforce commitments to adaptation and zero-emission objectives. In this sense, Regions 4 has said that “the year 2021 should be the year to connect these points and draw lines of actions in multilateral governance. It must be the year of synergy. It is vital to join forces on biodiversity and climate action and contribute to the sustainable development goals. These efforts must be supported by strong multi-level governance, solidarity and international cooperation ”.

To demonstrate the commitment of regional governments, apart from different representatives from the United Nations, this event will have the participation of prominent regional leaders such as Mark Drakeford, Prime Minister of Wales, United Kingdom; Veronica Thörnroos, Prime Minister of the Aland Islands, Finland; Benedict Ayade, Governor of Cross River State, Nigeria; Pere Aragonès, President of the Government of Catalonia; Aka Aouélé, President of Sud-Comoé, Ivory Coast; and Abdessamad Sekkal, president of the Regional Council of Rabat Salé Kénitra and of ORU Fogar.

Registration for the event will be open until June 30 at bit.ly/R4Event1July. Only registered people will have access to the online platform. The event will have simultaneous interpretation in English, Spanish and French.
