Abdessamad Sekkal, President of the Moroccan region of Rabat-Salé-Kénitra, is the new President of ORU Fogar since the 16th October 2016, by decision of the General Assembly gathered in Quito (Ecuador) in the framework of the Conference Habitat III. The members of the United Regions Organisation also elected the new vice-president, Laurent Wauquiez, president of the French region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and the International Association of Francophone Regions (AIRF).
The General Assembly was convened in extraordinary session in the last meeting of the Executive Bureau held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on the 13th of April 2016, to renew the presidency upon the expiry of Paúl Carrasco and Abdelkébir Berkia’s mandate as President and Vice-President respectively. They were both elected in the General Assembly held in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, on the 3rd of September 2014. In the framework of such an important international meeting as Habitat III, ORU Fogar payed them hommage and thanked the committed work they have carried out in the last years.
Right after the welcome ceremony and the transfer of powers within the General Assembly, President Sekkal chaired the meeting thanking first of all the member regions for the confidence placed in him: “The fact that my first act as President is in Ecuador, in the middle of the World, can only bode well for this mandate that pretends to reinforce the international action of the Organisation.” He also highlighted that President Carrasco initiated this commitment: “With him, ORU Fogar’s Presidency left Europe to travel to Latin America, and now to Africa with me”.
Abdessamad Sekkal is the President of the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region since 2015. He is an architect and chairs the Thematic Commission of Territorial Development and Urbanism of the Justice and Development Party. Before assuming office at the regional government, he managed several institutions and research centres in the field of urbanism and urban and territorial development. For its part, Laurent Wauquiez took office as Vice-President in representation of AIRF, and he is the President of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region since January 2016. He is the former Minister for Higher Education and Research at the French government and he currently lead the Republican, succeeding Nicolas Sarkozy.
