At the beginning of 2015, when the United Nations had not yet approved the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals, ORU Fogar and UNDP launched their Regional Good Practices Award. The Basque Country, the State of Rio de Janeiro, the State of Jalisco and the Municipality of Colonia, Uruguay, have been awarded that year. Since then, 30 good practices, which constitute ORU Fogar's Regional Good Practices Bank, have been awarded.
Thus, for this 2022, the seventh edition of the Award has already been launched. The call is addressed to intermediate governments from all over the world and applications can be submitted until 31 May 2022. After the success of previous editions, convened by the United Regions Organisation (ORU Fogar) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), this 2022 edition will once again reward the best cases of policies implemented by intermediate governments that have produced positive results in their public management. The Award aims to promote and encourage the exchange of good practices that have been implemented by regional governments to improve the quality of services. It is aimed at regions, provinces and federal states that wish to make a decisive contribution, both locally and internationally, to improving service delivery to all citizens, and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Good practices can be submitted in English, French and Spanish until 31 May 2022. The guidelines for participation are available on ORU Fogar's website. A team of professionals with a recognised background and public accreditation from the academic, business, cultural and public administration worlds will be in charge of selecting the finalists and the winners among all the applications received. The five finalist nominations will be presented during ORU Fogar's next General Assembly, published in the organisation's Best Practices Bank and disseminated through the organisers' channels to ensure their maximum visibility.
During the (still virtual) award ceremony of the VI Prize, in December 2021, ORU Fogar's President, Rachid El Abdi, noting the few awards received by African regions, expressed his commitment to make the maximum dissemination of this year's call among the regions of the continent, encouraging them to participate.
