The US town of Springs, Colorado, held the First Summit of North American Governors and Premiers on the 30th and 31st October. The three countries that make up the North American block were present at the Summit, with seven regional leaders from the US, six from Mexico and two from Canada. The aim of the meeting was to promote cross-border dialogue to achieve actions and opportunities in the fields of economics, politics, energy, sustainable development and environment.
The six states of México–Hidalgo, Jalisco, Puebla, Quintana Roo, Yucatán and México– attended the meeting in representation of the National Conference of Governors (CONAGO), with whom ORU has recently established cooperation links. The US states –Colorado, Utah, Michigan, South Dakota, New México, Virgin Islands and Illinois– participated as members of the National Governors Association (NGA), and the Canadian ones –Yukon and New Brunswick– under Canada’s Council of the Federation (COF).
The Governor of the state of Mexico and Chairman of CONAGo, Eruviel Ávila, reiterated its interest to hold the Summit to share successful experiences and forge alliances among entities of all three nations. “The North American Governors and Premiers, we are making history today. We are turning a new page of the success, growth and development history of this great region, which represents the world’s largest economy. It is the first step we take to lay solid foundations for friendly, cultural and trading relationships that will result in greater well-being for Canada, the United States and México”, Ávila affirmed, and he expressed the Mexican governors’ commitment to strengthen North America and make it a large economic, cultural, technological and environmental block.
The CONAGO, in fact, suggested drawing up a common agenda for all three nations, which would make it possible to consolidate the block. The Summit of North American Governors and Premiers ended successfully with the agreement to hold a second edition, for which Eruviel Ávila has offered to host in Mexico in 2017.
