Third Regional Summit on Food Security to be held in Azuay

ORU Fogar will hold its third summit on food security. After the summits of Dakar, Senegal, in 2010 and Medellín, Antioquia, Colombia, in 2012, the host city will be Cuenca, in Ecuador. The capital of the province of Azuay will host the "Zero Hunger" III World Summit of Regions on Food Security and Sovereignty, during the 27 and 28 April 2018.

Five years after the second meeting of the Summit in Medellín, ORU Fogar resumes this debate to show the commitment of the regions to the global challenge of eradicating hunger. Led by ORU Fogar, this initiative has been convened and is being organized by the Azuay Prefecture and the Consortium of Provincial Autonomous Governments of Ecuador -CONGOPE.-.

This time, the event will focus on the Sustainable Development Goal 2 "Zero hunger", understanding and recognizing that it is in the regions where food security is based and that agriculture is the most employment-intensive sector in the world, providing the way of life for 40% of the world's population.

The event, like the two previous ones, aims to show the involvement of the regions with the objective "Zero Hunger". It is not, however, an event with a participation limited to intermediate-regional governments, but an open call to all the actors involved in development, from central governments to local governments, NGOs and the economic world.

Cuenca is the capital of the province of Azuay. Located in the south of Ecuador, with more than 500 thousand inhabitants, it is the third most important city in this country. Due to its colonial architecture and aesthetics, its historic centre was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999. In addition, its gastronomy, history and culture make it an attractive city for visitors and tourists.
