ARDCI to host the Climate Chance Africa Summit

The next 28-29th of June, the Assembly of Regions and Districts of Côte d'Ivoire (ARDCI) will organize the Climate Chance in Abidjan.

The Climate Chance summits aim to bring together the international community of non-state actors committed to combating climate change, paying particular attention to the territorial approach. Summits, among others, rely on thematic coalitions of non-state actors. The thematic coalitions supported by Climate Chance are formed by international non-state actors from different major groups recognised by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC): regions, local governments and municipal authorities, environmental NGOs, business and industry, trade unions, farmers, women, researchers, youth, indigenous peoples, etc.. In 2015, the Climate and Territories Summit held in Lyon underlined the determination of non-state actors to contribute to the Agenda for Action. Recalling the challenge of their mobilization in the fight against climate change, it was also pointed out that it is through the territorial approach and the action of civil society that mitigation and adaptation efforts are being undertaken. In 2016, the first edition of the Climate Chance Summit in Nantes enabled non-state actors a few months after the historic signing of the Paris Agreement to draw the first concrete lessons and propose measures to strengthen it.

The Climate Chance Africa 2018 Summit therefore aims to bring together the community of non-state actors from across Africa (communities, businesses, NGOs, trade unions, youth organizations, indigenous peoples, women, the scientific community, etc.), major UNFCCC groups committed to the fight against climate change and their associated networks.

A summit to disseminate and strengthen action against climate change in Africa, through coalitions of actors with operational roadmaps. Thematic workshops will highlight good practices: exemplary and inspiring climate action projects.

Finally, this summit will make it possible to prepare the specific messages of the African continent, to show its commitment, to specify the specific requests and proposals of the regions and local actors who are fighting against climate change in Africa. The African position will then be taken to international events.
