Practice submitted to ORU Fogar’s VII Regional Best Practice Award by Lazio (Italy), with input record number 12.
The good practice consists planting 6 million trees, one for each citizen in the region, in order to empower and promote the territory's natural capital, protect the environment, reduce pollution, and encourage the circular economy. The project was designed to involve a wide variety of stakeholders and was designed in accordance with the Italian Ministry of Ecologic Transition's sustainable development strategy, together with seven focus groups on strategic topics related to the UN SDGs, specifically SDG 11, SDG 13, and SDG 15. The primary goal is to fight climate change, enhance the region's ability to withstand environmental risks, and mitigate the effects of severe weather events. By generating urban and peri-urban clusters capable of absorbing up to 240 thousand tonnes of CO2 per year in the Lazio region, the initiative aims to provide positive outcomes for all cities and communities in the region through a safer environment. This will ultimately develop the Lazio region's resilience capacity, reducing the risks of land degradation while mitigating their potential effects and creating positive environmental, social, and economic outcomes, as well as positioning the region as a national leader in sustainability.
