The Barcelona Metropolitan Transport Authority (AMT), in collaboration with ORU Fogar, has formalized the donation of three buses intended for school transportation in the Department of Dagana, Senegal. This initiative seeks to improve access to education and promote the continuity of children within the school system.
The buses, which have been in service for some time and are no longer operational in Barcelona, will be used on school routes connecting various localities in Dagana. This action will benefit more than 6,000 students, including more than 2,500 girls, by facilitating access to secondary schools, high schools and vocational training centres.
The project originated from a visit to Barcelona in November 2023 by the President of the Departmental Council of Dagana, Ababacar Khalifa Ndao, who was invited by ORU Fogar. During his stay, key meetings were held with representatives of the Generalitat and civil society, culminating in the request and donation of these school vehicles.
In a formal ceremony held on January 23, the mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, officially handed over the buses to the President of the Department of Dagana, Ababacar Khalifa Ndao. The Metropolitan Transport Authority played a crucial role in selecting and preparing the vehicles, ensuring they are fit for their new purpose in Senegal.
Through this initiative, Barcelona reaffirms its commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals, promoting inclusive education and gender equality in Senegal while fostering international cooperation for the benefit of vulnerable communities.
