The president of the Departmental Council of Dagana, Ababacar Ndao, together with the General Secretary of ORU Fogar, Carles Llorens, have visited the region of Pla d'Urgell, in Lleida, Catalonia, to launch a pioneering initiative that seeks to transform the management model of temporary workers. The project will welcome fifteen young people from Senegal in a bet for circular migration, which combines effective work in leading companies of the Catalan agricultural sector, with technical training.
Unlike traditional seasonal hiring models, this pilot scheme ensures that participants not only meet the demand for skilled labor in Catalonia, but also receive a formal qualification and business training. As explained by Carles Llorens, the goal is that these young people, after a period of three years, return to their country of origin to lead their own agricultural projects, turning temporary experience into a motor of permanent development for the Department of Dagana.
This pilot project is possible thanks to job offers from reference companies such as Nufri or the Miralcamp Cooperative, and has the support of the Asaja union. The training will be carried out by the Institut de Mollerussa. There, temporary workers will develop their learning, emphasizing the use of latest generation machinery, phytosanitary knowledge and efficient irrigation systems. Ababacar Ndao stressed that the transfer of this knowledge is vital for the valley of the Senegal river, a region with immense agro-food potential that requires technicians trained in European quality and safety standards.
The institutional commitment, supported by the Institut de Mollerussa and political representatives such as the Senator Pasión Gador Romero, underscores the importance of creating legal and orderly channels for the flow of temporary workers between continents. This model of regional cooperation not only resolves the generational renewal in the primary sector of the host regions, but also dignifies the work in the field and offers real alternatives for the future against irregular migration, fully aligning with the sustainable development goals promoted by ORU Fogar.
