Manabí moves forward to become a World Gastronomic Region by 2026

During the month of October, the Ecuadorian province of Manabí has moved decisively towards becoming a World Gastronomic Region in 2026. Nestled on the coast of Ecuador, Manabí is famous for its vibrant culinary scene, offering fresh seafood, traditional dishes and unique local ingredients. Emblematic dishes such as ceviche or arroz con menestra reflect the region's deep cultural roots and history. All of this has been highlighted with a view to becoming a gastronomic capital.

During the V Summit of Zero Hunger Regions, held in Barcelona, Manabí was able to present its candidacy, highlighting its commitment to showcase its gastronomic offerings on a global stage. The Prefecture's representative, Fabián Acuña, was accompanied by Celia Perpinyà, who is the manager of Catalunya Región Gastronómica Mundial 2025. It was thus possible to highlight the shared enthusiasm of Ecuadorians and Catalans for culinary excellence and the celebration of regional gastronomic cultures.

No less important was the visit to Manabí from October 20 to 26. An international jury, headed by Dr. Diane Dodd, president of the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Art and Tourism, IGCAT, visited the province to evaluate the preparation of the candidacy. They reviewed the book of the proposal entitled Manabí: Gastronomy of the Middle of the World, presented in December 2023. The four members of the jury were particularly impressed, both by the initiatives undertaken and the strong community support. The jury also praised the region's educational institutions for offering programs in tourism, hospitality and gastronomy, and recognized the vibrant International Festival of Millenarian Gastronomy, which showcased the community's passion for local cuisine.

To continue the campaign for the nomination, the provincial government plans to organize a series of culinary workshops and events through 2026, involving local chefs and communities. Associations of farmers and artisans will further promote sustainable ingredients, reinforcing the region's commitment to preserving its rich culinary traditions. Prefect Leonardo Orlando, in particular, noted the importance of this award designation, stating, “Our goal is to elevate Ecuadorian cuisine to the world stage, showcasing the unique flavors of Manabí and promoting sustainable practices that benefit our communities.”

Following the visit and the jury's statement that it will recommend the nomination, social media was abuzz with excitement. Chefs, gastronomy enthusiasts and citizens of Manabí celebrated the news and looked forward to the upcoming culinary events. The International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Art and Tourism will definitively decide the designation of World Gastronomic Region 2026 during the month of December.
