The Government of Catalonia has hosted the 5th Summit of Zero Hunger Regions on Food Sovereignty and Security. The dialogue between the regions came to Catalonia with considerable experience, dating back to 2010 with the first summit held in Senegal. Here at the summit in Catalonia, the regions raised their voices to claim their leading role in the fight against hunger.
In 2021, during the United Nations Food Systems Summit, Secretary-General António Guterres underscored the crucial importance of sustainable food systems. In Catalonia, we understand that, in order to achieve the sustainability of food systems, these systems must take the region as their frame of reference.
For three days, and with the participation of regions from all over the world, we addressed crucial issues regarding the transformation of food systems. We have explored the protection and promotion of our food cultures and identities, as well as ways to make our food heritage take root and flourish in the future. We also discussed strategies to make the food system more sustainable, including combating food waste and decarbonizing the agri-food sector as ways to eradicate world hunger.
Additionally, we have analysed how to ensure access to and efficient use of water in rural areas, in light of the impact of climate change on the availability of this scarce resource and its effects on food production, value chains and markets. We have also emphasized the importance of providing rural areas with infrastructure and opportunities that allow the population to put down roots. This way, we can ensure that the territory remains vibrant and produces food locally.
The “Catalonia Manifesto”, approved at the 5th Summit of Zero Hunger Regions, recognizes the importance of taking decisive, coordinated and urgent measures to address these global challenges. It also establishes a concrete framework for action so that regions can take a proactive role in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 2: ZERO HUNGER. The manifesto represents a collective commitment to address the root causes of hunger and malnutrition, while promoting food systems that are equitable, sustainable and resilient in the face of current and future global challenges.
This meeting has been a forum that has brought together experts, regional leaders and key players in the agri-food sector. Participants took this opportunity to share knowledge, strategies and best practices, present innovative technological solutions and forge strategic alliances.
The summit reaffirmed the regions' commitment to work towards more resilient, sustainable and inclusive food systems that not only feed the world's population, but also preserve our food traditions and protect the environment.
By hosting this summit, Catalonia has not only strengthened its resolve in realising the goal of "Zero Hunger", but has also set a precedent for regional action in the fight against hunger. We are convinced that by working together and leveraging our collective strengths, we can make a major contribution to a fairer and more sustainable future for all, where food security and sovereignty is a universal reality.
